High Speed to Russia

The new high-speed link between Russian and Finland is now open following the departure of the first Allegro train from Helsinki to St Petersburg.

The launch ceremony at Helsinki Central Station was attended by Finnish President Taria Halonen, Russian Railways president Vladimir Yakunin, VR Group CEO Mikael Aro and other dignitaries and marked the culmination of years of joint work by the two countries.

Yakunin said: “It’s symbolic that this has happened during a year when we’re marking 140 years since railway services between our contries began. I am confident both European and Russian passengers will highly appreciate this new transport product.”
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin boarded the Allegro for its maiden journey in December, and prices from St Petersburg-Helsinki cost €84 in second class and €134 for first class.
