With thousands of travelers choosing to explore Alaska and the Yukon Territory with Holland America Line each year, the company has added new shore excursions in Alaska to appeal to an increasingly broad range of interests. Food lovers, adventure seekers and art enthusiasts will all find not-to-be-missed experiences among the more than 250 excursions offered in 2008.

“We have a long history of arranging tours in Alaska,” said Richard D. Meadows, CTC, executive vice president, marketing, sales and guest relations. “Our experienced staff actively searches for unique tours that offer a new adventure or different perspective on a particular location. The variety lets guests personalize their vacation experience each day.”

Artistic expressions

In Haines, a new tour called Guides Choice Photo Discovery focuses on photographing the wildlife and stunning scenery of the Chilkat Valley. A professional photographer escorts a small group to a choice location and helps guests set up the best shots. In Skagway, a new Golden Glassblowing Experience takes guests to a glassblowing shop to blow their own glass art with Alaskan gold incorporated into the design.

Adventure

For a different view of Alaska, snorkeling is offered in Sitka and Ketchikan. Typically a warm-water sport, a wetsuit or dry suit provides protection from the elements while exploring the usually unseen underwater wilderness of Southeast Alaska. A narrated tour in calm, clear waters teeming with marine life lets guests observe and handle a variety of sea life.

Fans of the Discovery Channel’s show Deadliest Catch, highlighting Alaska’s crab fishing industry, won’t want to miss the Bering Sea Crab Fisherman’s Tour in Ketchikan. Guests set out on the f/v Aleutian Ballad-the same vessel as seen on the show but modified for comfort and safety-with real fisherman who will set and pull pots for an inside look into their life and livelihood.

Culinary delights

A new Ketchikan excursion called Exclusive Mountaintop Flightseeing and Crab Feast combines a flight on a Beaver floatplane to the remote George Inlet Lodge, a crab feast in the Oceanside dining room, and a narrated coastal drive back to town.

Another new tour in Ketchikan sure to attract seafood lovers is An Alaskan Chef’s Table. A delectable five-course tasting menu highlighting Alaska’s sustainable bounty is served in a private club room overlooking the harbor. The Chef will share stories, tips and secrets for successful brining, grilling, roasting and smoking. Ketchikan is also a jumping off point for exploring Misty Fjords National Monument by plane or boat.

Guests on CruiseTours have a variety of tour options available to further customize their land tour. From hiking in Kluane Park to floating down the Klondike River or halibut fishing, adventures await for every type of explorer.

The leader in Alaska tourism for 60 years, Holland America Line has eight premium cruise ships and twenty-nine cruise tours offering a incredible variety of vacation options in Alaska in 2008. Optional tours are available in most ports or towns throughout Alaska and the Yukon Territory.
