Jewel of the Seas to receive a £20 million makeover

Royal Caribbean International has announced a $30 million (£20 million) makeover for its 90,090 gross ton cruise ship, Jewel of the Seas, in 2016.

The programme of works will be completed in April 2016 in time for the ship to sail its summer Mediterranean season.

A fresh and contemporary style will be introduced across the ship. It will receive new staterooms, new restaurants, technology upgrades and upgraded entertainment options.

A two-bedroom family suite and 24 new outside and balcony cabins will be installed as will three popular restaurants from other ships in the fleet – Giovanni’s Table, Vintages and Izumi. A new poolside movie screen will be fitted to offer films under the stars. Chops Grille, the spa and retail areas also will be refreshed with a new modern design. VOOM high-speed internet access will also be added to the ship.

The Radiance-class ship already boasts nearly three acres of exterior glass, ocean-facing glass elevators and floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the ship.

The family-friendly ship will sail round-trip from Civitavecchia on a variety of Eastern Mediterranean itineraries. The seven-, eight- and nine-night itineraries will include calls throughout Italy, Greece and Turkey including visits to Athens and Mykonos in Greece, Ephesus in Turkey, and Santorini in Greece.

Also sailing in the Mediterranean in 2016 will be Rhapsody of the Seas, Vision of the Seas, and Harmony of the Seas – the world’s largest cruise ship. Navigator of the Seas and Independence of the Seas will offer selected no-fly Mediterranean sailings from Southampton while Ovation of the Seas will transit through the region bound for China in May.
