security staff dont consider domestic violence a priority - and refused to allow me to off board until until I had been seen by security team at 5pm when everyone had to be back in the ship
Going back to my cabin one night I was stopped by an elderly couple leaning out of their rooms begging for help. I could hear screaming coming from further down the corridor.
The couple explained they had called security several times over 15 minute but that security hadnt come. The couple explained they were very worried that the man in the adjoining room was going to kill the woman. I thought to myself that if this elderly couple were so worried that they would ask for help from a man using a mobility scooter that it must be bad.
I got off my mobility scooter and as I approached the door I could hear load banging, smashing of glass and a female screaming.
I banged on the cabin door, where upon the room fell into silence, with no answer I banged on the door again, with the elderly couple watching as they leant out from their room.
The door was opened by a naked man who was holding a thick coat around his waist. Wanting to ensure my own safety, I asked for the man, who was exceptionally drunk, to step out of the room and to sit on the floor in the corridor so not to fall. The man was compliant, other than he knelt on the floor putting his hands on his head. Given he was so intoxicated I thought that kneeling was better than him standing. I asked if he minded if i spoke to the female at the door of the room, which he said was okay, frequently stating he just wanted another room for the night. The female who was also very intoxicated confirmed she was unhurt stating the hand had not touched her. I asked the female to sit on the bed so that she would also not fall and to ensure she didnt stand on any of the broken glass which appeared to be everywhere. The situation was now calm with the exception of the female becoming very distressed thinking the man was going to leave her.
After 5 so minutes two security persons wondered down the corridor with no urgency. I explained the situation, were another security person arrived. The female security officer briefly spoke to the female where she pulled the female out of the room pushing here up against the corridor wall. I explained the man had stated he would get another room where the security woman stated the man was the principle booker so she had to be removed. The security people took my details and i continued on my w left. The next morning i received a call informing me I could not leave the ship at its destination or use services until I had been seen by security, which didnt happen until 5pm. On seeing security I was seen by three members of staff who asked me many questions about the incident, despite the fact they had footage exactly what had happened. Did i know the couple, had I fallen out with the man during the cruise, on and on. They explained the problem was that i had told the man to kneel down with his hand on his head. Explaining I wouldnt have asked him kneel as its easier to get to a standing position when when sat against a wall. I explained the man was very drunk which they also confirmed their opinion was also the he was very drunk. Why did I stop and bang on his door? Because the couple next door thought he was killing her and they had called for security but no one had attended and given it was clear that i was on a mobility scooter the couple must have been desperate. The security were very accusing, posing stupid questions, why was i where i was when my cabin was the other way, not that people dont make wrong turns on a ship. Eventually the explained that the man had followed my instructions as he thought I was security! I explained I had not said or implied I was anything of the sort, which the security stated they could hear the conversation on the recording so knew this. I was even asked why i was wearing all back! I asked if they had spoken the couple, which they confirmed they had very recently as they had been of the ship on an excursion. I couldnt understand why I couldnt leave the ship but the couple could. I asked if there had been a complaint about me? Which they confirmed they had not. I couldnt work out what the point of accusing me off, what and so i asked if they were trying to imply i was going around the ship on my mobility scooter looking for incidents so i could pretend that I had the rubbish and low paid job of ship security. I asked why they took over 20 minutes to get the incident. I was informed they werent considered urgent as they always occur due to the all inclusive drink packages. The head of security said that they would have to meet up before going to the incident, and that they wouldnt run or walk quickly as what would this look like to the other guests on the ship I explained in the UK police attend domestic violence calls a priority 1 incident due to the number of deaths involved. Assumably where these security people are found, they dont have same priority, given one was from Egypt and the other one was from South Africa.
