Last year we asked you to vote for your cruise favourites in the 2020 Wave Awards. More than 82,000 of you responded, and I’d like to thank everyone who took the time to enter. The winners of the seven Readers’ Choice categories will be honoured at our annual Wave Awards ceremony in London – a glittering occasion that will take place this year on 2 April. This month we reveal the Best Destination shortlist (see page 11), and two of the contenders are Caribbean islands, so I’m sure you’ll love reading our eight-page guide to choosing your perfect cruise in this ever-popular part of the world (see page 48).
But cruising is not just about the Caribbean. Many of you, I know, have a polar expedition at the top of your bucket list, and last month I was lucky enough to be invited to LA for the launch of Viking’s new expedition line – its first foray into polar cruising. Ebullient chairman Torstein Hagen revealed full details of the two new ships, Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris, that will set sail in 2022, journeying to the Arctic, Antarctica and to North America’s Great Lakes. Lucky guests will be able to explore below the waves on the ships’ own submarines (yellow ones, naturally), and even help out the scientists in the onboard labs. With just 378 guests each, these two vessels are going to be in big demand – especially from the Beatles fans among you.
And talking of music, as we went to press, P&O announced that Take That star Gary Barlow will be joining their new ship Iona as guest musical director in May. It seems Gary has always fancied himself as a bit of a cruise singer…
It’s only February and the fun has already begun. See you next month for more cruise adventures.
