Before we start, you should know that this list focuses on the extras that will make your Bordeaux cruise smoother. You’ll already have the essentials: passport, travel insurance, cruise documents, prescription medication, credit card, sunglasses, headphones and smartphone. But here are a few more things to consider for this region.

What to check with your operator

Cabin amenities vary between Bordeaux river cruise ships. Most are well equipped, but some may not have USB ports, gym access or spa facilities. If you plan to use a plunge pool or steam room, pack swimwear. Many lines provide bathrobes and slippers, but check in advance.

Check the dress code too. Some cruises expect smart casual or even formal attire at dinner, and others are more relaxed. You might want to plan around the requirements for the excursions, too. If you're attending a classical concert or a château lunch, you might want a smarter outfit or two.

The things you may have missed

Health

UK GHIC card

UK citizens should bring a valid Global Health Insurance Card for access to local healthcare. Some insurers also expect you to carry one, and not doing so may impact your coverage if you need to make a claim.

Toiletries & non-prescription medications

Pharmacies are common in towns like Libourne or Cadillac, but you may not have time to find one. Ships usually have a small shop, but prices will be high compared to buying from a supermarket. Bring painkillers, antihistamines, plasters and motion sickness tablets just in case. The cruise line will likely provide shampoo, conditioner and body wash. But make sure to bring any other toiletries.

Technology

Plug adapters and cables

Ships tend to use two-pin plugs (Type C or E). Pack an EU adapter and the right leads for phones, cameras and tablets. A portable charger will help on longer excursions.

Roaming or e-SIM

Bordeaux cruises stay within signal range. Most UK and EU travellers won’t pay extra for roaming, but it’s worth confirming with your mobile phone provider. If you need data, consider an e-SIM or a roaming plan.

Payment methods

Euros in cash

While onboard spending is usually cashless, local cafés, markets or vineyards may not accept cards. Bring a small amount of euros for tips or purchases.

Multi-currency cards

Cards like Monzo, Starling or Revolut are widely accepted in France and offer better exchange rates than traditional banks. They’re also helpful for tracking spending on the go.

Accessories

Sunscreen

Even in spring or autumn, it can be sunny in Bordeaux. You’ll spend time walking around towns or vineyards, so pack a good SPF.

Hat or cap

For open-air tastings or walking tours, bring something to shield your head from the sun. A cap or wide-brimmed hat works well.

Insect repellent

Evenings by the river can bring out the bugs. A small bottle of repellent will make sunset drinks on deck or strolls in the vines more pleasant.

Day bag

You’ll need a small rucksack or cross-body bag for port days to carry water, snacks, suncream, a camera and anything else for the day’s excursion.

Clothing

Comfortable walking shoes

You’ll likely walk on cobbled streets, château driveways or vineyard paths. Pack comfortable shoes with a good grip that you can wear all day.

Layers

Evenings on the river can be cooler than expected, especially outside of summer. A fleece or light jumper is useful.

Waterproofs

A waterproof jacket or poncho and a pair of waterproof overtrousers won’t take up much space in your suitcase, but they can save the day if you’re stuck in a downpour during an excursion. These are especially useful if you travel outside of summer.

Travel umbrella

Alternatively, you can also pack a travel umbrella. Just make sure it fits inside your day bags for when you go on excursions.

Scarf or shawl

A lightweight wrap is useful for layering or visiting churches. It doubles as a cover-up or windbreak.

Extra socks

If you're out walking in the Médoc or Saint-Émilion, your feet will thank you for fresh, dry socks at the end of the day.
