Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about finding cruises for less than £1,000 and bagging a great deal
Can you find cruises for less than £1,000?
Cruising can be expensive – very expensive, even – but you can find cruises for less than £1,000 per person. And by that, we don’t just mean a cruise-only fare where you must book flights on top. No, we mean a full cruise experience, either departing from a UK port or with flights included in the price.
Of course, if your budget is limited, you won’t have the full range of destinations and durations on offer, but you should still be able to find sailings well within the £1,000-per-person bracket.
What destinations are available for less than £1,000
When looking at that price range, no-fly cruises from a UK port are always a good option.
Sailings to the Canary Islands, the Norwegian Fjords, the Atlantic coast of Spain and Portugal, and around the British Isles can usually be found for less than £1,000.
Some of the short-haul fly/cruise destinations, such as the Mediterranean or the Baltic, may also be available with a three-digit price tag.
A third option is repositioning transatlantic cruises, either from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean (usually around October time) or the other way (usually around March time). We often see great prices on these sailings, sometimes dropping as low as £800 for voyages of 10 nights or even more.
If you’re lucky, you may even find a Southampton-New York City transatlantic crossing on Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 drop just below the £1,000 mark, including one-way flights. But such finds are increasingly rare.
How long can I sail for less than £1,000?
You’ll find a variety of durations for less than £1,000. But it goes without saying that the shorter the cruise, the more likely it is to fall below £1,000.
Of course, mini cruises (two to five nights) almost always remain in three-digit price territory. But week-long voyages in that bracket are also relatively common.
No-fly cruises from UK ports of up to 12 nights can sometimes be found for less than £1,000, but these are rather unusual and are generally for travel in the off-season or last-minute deals.
What cruise lines have sailings for less than £1,000?
You’ll have a surprising amount of choice when it comes to cruise lines. Ambassador Cruise Line, Celestyal, Costa, Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, Marella Cruises, MSC Cruises, P&O Cruises and Royal Caribbean International all offer voyages of seven nights or more for less than £1,000 per person.
Looking at slightly more premium lines, you’ll also have options, but fewer and farther between. Celebrity Cruises, Cunard and Princess Cruises have a handful of sailing just squeezing under the £1,000 mark.
What cabins can I book for less than £1,000?
It depends a lot on the cruise line, destination and duration of the cruise you’re looking at. For a seven-night cruise, the rule of thumb is:
- Forget about finding a Suite
- Look for a deal, and you might find an Outside or – even – a Balcony Cabin on a mid-market line
- Expect to be in an Inside Cabin if you choose to sail with a more premium line
How can I increase my chances of finding a cruise for less than £1,000?
Look for a deal or a promotion. Cruise lines often have sales for Black Friday and at the start of the year (a period known as Wave Season). They can also offer last-minute discounts.
Early-bird sales might not have the absolute lowest prices, but cover a large range of sailings. Last-minute deals can have deeper discounts, but they only apply to sailings for which the cruise lines have unsold cabins – so the choice will be limited.

What should I consider before booking a cruise for less than £1,000?
Before booking, consider what you might need to spend money on during the cruise – it’s not all about the headline price.
For example, we can’t remember seeing a sailing with Virgin Voyages for less than £1,000 per person. But the line includes speciality dining in its fare, while others can charge £50 per person per meal. If you’re a foodie and intend to visit all the speciality restaurants, this can make a difference.
Similarly, Marella Cruises is one of the rare mid-market all-inclusive cruise lines. Other operators charge from £40 to £80 per person per day for drinks packages. If you enjoy a beer at lunch, wine with dinner and a cocktail to round off the day, you might be better off paying more for an all-inclusive cruise
Additionally, understand the trade-offs. Paying less on a cruise often means travelling during the shoulder or the off-season. Or on older ships. There is nothing wrong with either of these things. The Med in the autumn can be fabulous, and many older ships are among cruisers’ favourites, but you need to be aware of what you’re signing up for.
