A Caribbean cruise is practically a byword for escapism. But if you’ve never been to the Caribbean – or on a cruise, for that matter – it can be hard to know what it’s actually like. You might have a hazy vision of turquoise water and white-sand beaches, but without a real sense of how much the fantasy matches up to the reality.
It doesn’t help that no two Caribbean adventures are exactly the same. After all, honeymooners aren’t looking for precisely the same experience as a young family or solo sailor. That’s why we’re breaking it down by traveller type, so you can see what a day might look like for you.
Why Norwegian Cruise Line?
First things first: to have the Caribbean cruise of your dreams, it pays to pick the right line. Here, we’re zooming in on NCL. After all, it more or less invented the laid-back, island-hopping Caribbean cruise that’s captured our collective imagination for decades.
For almost 60 years, NCL has made the Caribbean more accessible to travellers from around the world, pioneering plenty of firsts along the way. For starters, it was the first to introduce the concept of a private island just for its guests, welcoming cruisers to Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas since the 1970s. Plus, it’s played a major part in developing ports across the region, such as Ocho Rios in Jamaica.
But beyond these standout moments, what cements NCL as a leader in Caribbean cruising is the sheer variety it offers. There are more than 42 Caribbean itineraries to choose from across 13 ships, ranging from more intimate vessels to NCL's latest and greatest Prima class. That means that whether you’re planning a romantic getaway, a multi-generational adventure or sailing solo, you’ll find an option that feels just right.
That extends to the experience once you’ve chosen your ideal cruise, too. On board NCL ships, you’ll find something for everyone, whether that’s a visit to the spa or family fun at the aquaparks. The choice of up to 20 dining venues is a particular standout, with cuisines ranging from Japanese to Brazilian and plenty to please varying tastes. All of it comes with the thoughtful, friendly service NCL is known for, making it easy to settle in and feel at home.
And to make your trip feel even more your own, there’s the More At Sea™ package. For just £249 per person on a seven- to eight-day cruise, it includes premium beverages, speciality dining, Wi-Fi and shore excursion discounts. The exceptional value means that you can spend more time soaking up views of the teal water with a cocktail in hand, and less time worrying about the bill.
For families

On NCL ships, there’s a wide range of family-friendly accommodations to suit different budgets, including multi-bedroom suites for up to six people. Many come with private balconies, too, so the whole family can enjoy fresh sea air and those blue-green seascapes.
The day often begins with a breakfast buffet, with plenty of kid-approved choices to keep even the fussiest eaters happy – think fresh fruit, pastries and cereal to set everyone up for the day.
If it’s a sea day, families usually spend it exploring the ship’s big-ticket attractions. For example, Norwegian Aqua has the Aqua Slidecoaster – the world’s first hybrid rollercoaster and waterslide at sea. Meanwhile, Norwegian Bliss has its own racetrack at sea, excellent for some adrenaline-filled family time. You’ll also typically find an arcade with both state-of-the-art VR and retro classics like Donkey Kong.
Kids and teens aged three to 17 can also hang out with passengers their own age at complimentary youth programmes like Splash Academy. Parents can drop off junior cruisers for creative play, sports challenges and games, then enjoy some well-earned time catching up on beach reads by the pool.
On shore days, there’s plenty to keep everyone entertained. For example, if you’re stopping in Nassau in the Bahamas, you can spend the day swimming with turtles, dolphins or even a passel of pigs, depending on your kids’ ages. Or, if you visit one of NCL’s private islands, you’ll find overwater swings, ziplining and splash zones. Great Stirrup Cay, for instance, is adding a huge new pool (the size of 20 tennis courts), complete with two swim-up bars, as well as a pier and tram, ready for November 2025. And that's before you consider that more exciting additions are yet to come (watch this space).
Come evening, winding down is easy. There are up to 20 dining venues to choose from, from high-end Italian at Onda by Scarpetta to chic French at Le Bistro, all with first-rate service from the friendly crew. And if parents fancy a proper date night, the Late Night Fun Zone offers childcare for a small fee so that the grown-ups can slip away to an upscale spot like fleet favourite Cagney's Steakhouse.
For couples

Whether it’s a honeymoon, anniversary or a just-because getaway, NCL has plenty of ways for couples to celebrate in style. On several NCL ships sailing the Caribbean, you’ll find the Haven, which certainly lives up to its name. Tucked away at the very top of the ship, this private enclave offers the most spacious accommodation onboard, along with a sense of seclusion that feels a world away from the bustle below. Guests can wake up there and check in with their 24-hour butler to arrange complimentary room service – breakfast in bed, sorted.
If it’s a sea day, they could spend it on an exclusive adults-only sundeck, complete with its own pool and hot tubs. From there, they might meander at their leisure to the thermal suite or book into the Mandara Spa for treatments ranging from classic couples’ massages to seaweed wraps and acupuncture.
Meanwhile, on a shore day, there’s no shortage of bucket-list experiences to share. In Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, that might mean horse riding along a scenic trail to a pristine beach or hiking through lush rainforest to the cascading Damajagua waterfalls. On a private island like Harvest Caye, it could mean snorkelling the Mesoamerican Reef before relaxing in an air-conditioned beach cabana.
To round off the day, couples can dine at the Haven Restaurant, reserved just for guests of the exclusive enclave, before heading to the Haven Lounge for a nightcap.
For solo travellers

Solo sailors are far from an afterthought with NCL. Its ships are designed to make independent travellers feel genuinely welcomed and thoughtfully catered for. That starts with stylish solo studios, designed and priced for one – no solo supplement required – and available across much of the fleet.
To ease into the day, guests can grab their morning fix from Starbucks or settle into a sit-down restaurant for made-to-order classics.
From there, the day is theirs to spend exploring the ship’s amenities: plush chaise beds await beside vast infinity pools overlooking the Caribbean’s cyan waves, while the adults-only Vibe Beach Club, complete with hot tubs, is a relaxing spot to enjoy a cocktail and toast the view. Plus, the studio lounge is an exclusive space for those staying in solo accommodation, making it a great spot to mingle with other independent travellers.
That said, when it comes to shore days, the beauty of travelling solo is that you can spend them precisely as you wish, no compromises required. Depending on your itinerary, that might mean exploring a bird sanctuary or nature reserve in Saint Martin, taking a Caribbean cooking class in Antigua or meeting monkeys and sloths in Roatán, Honduras.
That freedom continues at dinner: you can eat exactly what you fancy, whether that’s Japanese, Brazilian or Mediterranean cuisine. And when the sun goes down, the choice is still all yours, from Broadway-style shows and stand-up comedy to cocktails and live music late into the night.
What else to know before booking your NCL Caribbean cruise

If you’re picturing yourself on an NCL ship gliding across the turquoise waters of the Caribbean, here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Book ahead: If you're hoping to kick off 2026 with a winter escape, now's the time to plan, especially if you’ve got a particular type of accommodation in mind, such as a solo studio or a suite in the Haven.
- Consider a More At Sea™ package: It covers premium drinks, speciality dining, shore excursion credits and Starlink-powered Wi-Fi, so you can stay in touch with everyone back home while you’re island-hopping.
Choose your itinerary wisely: The Caribbean is a vast area, and destinations can vary significantly depending on where you sail. Here are a few we have our eyes on:
Seven-day cruise on Norwegian Aqua: Great Stirrup Cay & Dominican Republic
Eight-day cruise on Norwegian Breakaway: Bahamas & Florida
Ten-day cruise on Norwegian Getaway: Dominican Republic & Antigua
Seven-day cruise on Norwegian Encore: Harvest Caye, Cozumel & Roatán
- Don't overlook NCL's private islands: A real highlight of cruising with NCL is access to private islands Harvest Caye or Great Stirrup Cay. 2026 is a particularly good time to visit the latter – it’s getting a whole raft of new amenities, including a state-of-the-art pier, a 26,000-square-metre swimming pool and a tram service.
- Make the most of your departure port: Keep in mind that NCL sails from some of the most attractive cities in all of the US, including Miami, Orlando, New Orleans and New York. These can make a pre- or post-cruise stay an incredible way to elevate your voyage. Think jazz nights and Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans or Disney World with the whole family in Orlando.
