Hurtigruten has been cruising the coast of Norway since 1893, delivering passengers and goods to ports that are otherwise hard to reach. Today, it’s known as a top option for cruisers looking to sail the Norwegian fjords and witness the Northern Lights.

Beyond 130 years of know-how, what sets the cruise line apart is its industry-leading commitment to sustainable travel. Over the past four years, it’s invested approximately €100 million into technical upgrades, including vessels equipped with battery packs and new engines, significantly improving energy efficiency.

One such ship is MS Richard With, named after Hurtigruten’s founder. On the 29th of October 2025, it set sail on the line’s first-ever climate-neutral voyage. It’s currently charting a course along the line’s Coastal Express route, which takes guests on a round trip from Bergen to Kirkenes and back. The battery-hybrid ship will travel the 5,000 kilometres using 100 per cent biofuel made from materials like cooking oil and fat waste.

“This marks a historic moment in Hurtigruten’s more than 130-year legacy along the Norwegian coast. Most importantly, it’s further proof that emission cuts are possible today by using sustainable biodiesel, without the need to invest billions in new ships or infrastructure,” said Hedda Felin, CEO of Hurtigruten.

Lea Rankinen, managing director of Hurtigruten’s fuel supplier St1 Norway, agreed: “This voyage demonstrates how circular solutions can deliver real emission reductions today. Hurtigruten is showing decisive leadership, and for us at St1, this is about using technology and resources more intelligently. We turn waste into fuel and show that the energy transition is possible now.”

Bookings aboard the MS Richard With are available on Hurtigruten’s website.
