Brilliant Lady – the fourth ship from Virgin Voyages – has finally arrived. Following its unveiling to over 1,300 travel-industry insiders in Portsmouth and an inaugural 13-night invitation-only cruise to New York, the ship’s first paying guests boarded on 5 September.
In the coming year, Brilliant Lady will sail the Caribbean, through the Panama Canal, along the California coast and, finally, up to Alaska – an existing deployment for a much-anticipated ship.

But what makes Virgin Voyages’ new launch such an event? World of Cruising was lucky enough to spend a day on board. Here’s everything you need to know.
Evolving a winning formula

First, it’s worth mentioning that, as Virgin Voyages’ fourth ship, the launch of Brilliant Lady is a significant event; it’s a testament to the line’s continued success and demonstrates that its decision to do things its own way has paid off.
Brilliant Lady is an evolution of the brand’s formula, building on the success of its first three ships while introducing refinements that respond to guest feedback.
At its core, Brilliant Lady retains the DNA that defines Virgin Voyages: an adults-only, no-buffet, casually luxurious product with an emphasis on inclusivity, atmosphere and fun.
The difference is in the details. The ship represents a confident step forward, polishing the formula, broadening horizons with new destinations and deepening the experience without diluting the brand’s identity.
The line described this as the move from its disruptive launch phase to a more mature “experience era”, where the focus is on elevating what already works rather than reinventing it. That philosophy is evident throughout the ship’s design, entertainment, dining, and deployment strategy.
A wider world

One of the most significant changes is Brilliant Lady’s ability to transit the Panama Canal, something no other Virgin Voyages ship can do. Small structural adjustments make this possible, opening entirely new itineraries to Alaska, the West Coast of the US, Canada and beyond.
This expanded geographical reach gives the line more flexibility and offers travellers fresh options while maintaining the same style of cruising that has proved popular in the Caribbean and Mediterranean.
Sea days

Onboard, social hubs such as the Roundabout atrium have been designed to feel more open and inviting. This rethink of the traditional cruise ship atrium creates a space that works on different levels.
On the one hand, it’s the perfect place to mingle and spark new connections with guests. On the other, you’ll find plenty of quieter corners to enjoy a drink with your significant other or sailing mates.
With Alaska sailings and scenic cruising in mind, the Athletic Club now provides better vantage points to enjoy the destinations. A glass barrier, outward-facing loungers and circular daybeds ensure you make the most of the views.
These changes are subtle but demonstrate attention to how passengers use the spaces while preserving the distinctive Virgin Voyages aesthetic.
A real feast

As has always been with Virgin Voyages, the standard cruise fare includes dining at all the ship’s restaurants, including the speciality ones.
Brilliant Lady welcomes a new dining concept. Rojo by Razzle Dazzle introduces a small-plate evening venue with a Spanish twist, complementing the line’s existing variety of restaurants.
Rojo joins the existing lineup of Virgin Voyages dining venues, which includes the Wake, Pink Agave, Gunbae, Extra Virgin, the Test Kitchen and The Galley, a food hall with individual stalls serving sushi, burgers, noodles and more. Razzle Dazzle will continue to serve its traditional vegetarian-friendly brunch in the morning.
Starry eyes

Entertainment has been expanded too, with riveting shows such as Murder in the Manor, a playful 1980s-inspired murder mystery. The intimate cabaret-style set in The Manor is an ideal setting for a show where performers – at times – mingle among the audience.
Another newcomer in the entertainment lineup is Up With a Twist, an immersive supper-club experience blending food, cocktails and audience participation.
And with Virgin Voyages heading for the cooler climes of Alaska for the first time, the signature Scarlet Night party has been adapted, moving indoors while retaining its theatrical flair.
Bedtime

Cabins on Brilliant Lady retain the elements that have made Virgin Voyages stand out. The signature Seabeds remain, converting from sofa to bed. You’ll still be able to control lighting, climate and entertainment via the tablet.
Brilliant Lady sees the introduction of one new cabin type – the Sea Terrace: (Slightly) Smaller Balcony – which was created to allow repositioning of the lifeboats to enable the Panama Canal crossing.
These cabins are located on Deck 8, and fans of Virgin Voyages’ trademark balcony hammocks will be happy to hear that the Sea Terrace: (Slightly) Smaller Balcony come with not one, but two of them.
Virgin Voyages’ usual set of cabins (from Insider to regular Sea Terrace) and suites (located in the RockStar and Mega RockStar Quarters and designed by Tom Dixon). In total, more than 80 per cent of the cabins feature balconies. This number increases to over nine in 10 when outward-facing cabins are included.
The story continues

Ultimately, Brilliant Lady represents not a new book, but the next chapter in Virgin Voyages’ story; it builds on the existing strengths, creating something both novel and familiar for the brand’s regular guests.
And for those who have not experienced Virgin Voyages before? Well, Brilliant Lady is another reason to take the plunge and get on board one of those striking scarlet ships.
