Viking started out on Europe’s rivers in 1997 before launching into ocean cruising in 2015. Since then, it’s built a constellation of small ocean vessels – all near-identical by design to create a strong sense of consistency across the fleet.

Saturn follows Viking’s signature approach: Nordic styling, clear layouts and a grown-up, serene atmosphere that lets destinations shine.

Style & character: 4/5

Onboard, you’ll find a series of serene, elegant spaces, with Viking’s signature Scandi design evident throughout. The interiors exude understated luxury with a neutral palette, light woods and clean lines complemented by well-curated artworks and artefacts. Think an original glass sculpture by Norwegian artist Nico Widerberg in Majorelle blue, black-and-white photography of the founder’s family and large-scale pieces inspired by medieval tapestries.

What’s perhaps most notable is that, despite its relatively small size, the ship never feels cloistered or cramped. Generous floor-to-ceiling windows flood interiors with natural light. The atrium soars across three decks, adding to the sense of space.

Overall, the atmosphere is muted but inviting, well-pitched for a refined, adults-only ship. Minimalism here serves a clear purpose beyond aesthetics: it ensures the ship never competes with the destinations it visits. And why would it? When your itinerary includes the pristine fjords of Norway or the crystalline waters of Sardinia, the scenery deserves to take centre stage.

Cabins: 4.5/5

When you’re sailing to destinations like Iceland or the Amalfi coast, the scenery is central to the experience, meaning an inside cabin all but guarantees FOMO. One of Viking’s key selling points is that every stateroom and suite on its ocean ships opens onto a full-size veranda – in other words, no inside cabins, ever.

King-size beds (or a twin configuration), underfloor heating in the bathroom, and premium Freyja toiletries are standard across all six accommodation categories.

At the top end, the most luxurious suites come with a swathe of extra perks: a private ocean-view sauna, a welcome bottle of Veuve Clicquot and a vapour-light fireplace, among others.

Food & drink: 4.5/5

Viking offers an impressive selection of dining venues. Manfredi’s, inspired by classic Italian trattorias, serves hearty Tuscan favourites alongside dishes from northern Italy, with an extensive selection of rustic classics.

The Chef’s Table is another highlight. Guests enjoy a multi-course tasting menu built around thoughtful wine pairings, with each course carefully introduced by the sommelier.

For hands-on gourmets, the onboard cooking school is worth seeking out. Guests can accompany the chef to local markets to handpick fresh ingredients before learning how to prepare regional recipes – and, of course, sit down to enjoy the results.

Groups travelling together can also reserve one of the ship’s private dining spaces – an intimate way to celebrate a special occasion while sampling some of the best dishes on board. There’s also complimentary service available 24/7, should you fancy breakfast in bed or a midnight snack.

Service & facilities: 4/5

Viking Saturn is a small ship, so its facilities are more pared back than what you’d find on a mega vessel. But while you won’t come across flashy waterparks, casinos or virtual reality arcades, you will find well-appointed spaces designed with enrichment and relaxation in mind.

The Nordic spa is the standout: expect a sauna, plunge pool and snow grotto for a full range of thermal experiences. The sea-view fitness centre, complete with video classes, also goes a long way to leaving you refreshed and revitalised.

Another pleasant addition is the spacious library, home to a collection of destination-focused books curated by Heywood Hill, an independent London bookseller – a thoughtful touch for literary travellers.

You’ll also find a heated main pool with a retractable roof, allowing for year-round dips, whatever the weather. In warmer months, the space doubles as an outdoor cinema or transforms into an open-air venue for live music and dancing under the stars. On an upper deck, there’s mini golf and boules overlooking the water.

Service is consistently good, delivered by crew who strike a balance between friendly and unobtrusive.

Entertainment & excursions: 4.5/5

Feather boas, sequins and jazz hands aren’t the focus on a Viking sailing – expect something less glitzy and more enriching instead. Every itinerary includes a resident historian who delivers talks and shares insights about the places you visit. They even hold ‘office hours’, giving guests the chance to delve deeper one-on-one.

Viking’s resident musicians are equally impressive: a pianist, guitarist, violinist and cellist perform live throughout each voyage.

Beyond this core ensemble, guests can expect visiting lectures covering topics from art and architecture to music, geopolitics and the natural world. Most itineraries also include at least one destination performance – think traditional Portuguese fado, Italian opera or Greek dancing.

Viking also offers an impressive raft of shore excursions designed to give guests insight into local cuisine, culture, flora or fauna. Highlights range from a stop at Rick’s Café in Casablanca to a tasting at a winery in the shadow of Mount Etna or viewing original Viking ships in Denmark. Best of all, a complimentary excursion is included at every port.

Viking Cruises sits firmly in the luxury category, but generally offers competitive fares, especially given how much is included in the price. Flights from London and selected regional airports, one complimentary shore excursion in every port, free Wi-Fi, gratuities and beer, wine and soft drinks with lunch and dinner are all part of the package.
