Excellent cruise combining all the traditional aspects of cruising. Excellent service and a real sense of community made for a very relaxing and memorable experience. First class entertainment and a superb dining experience added to the joy of a Fred Olsen cruise.
Inevitably given national infection rates and the 2 day+ window for Covid infection to be detected there was Covid on board. The crew from captain to deck hand were professional in their attitude and behaviour. There was sensitive care of the relatively small number of people affected in the course of a 28 day cruise.
The original cruise included Black Sea ports. Changes had to be made with little notice. The resulting itinerary was interesting and varied though with brief stops in a few ports.
It was its usual wonderful cruise
It was a 4 night cruise but embarkation was not until 1915hrs on the 1st day (23/9) which I was not informed about when I booked. Disembarkation was 0800hrs on 27/9. So this ended up being a 3 day cruise.
Wonderful, caring crew as always with Fred. Nothing is too much trouble. Efficient boarding and disembarkation. Highest standards of cleanliness throughout the vessel. Friendly companions at set dinner table and at all other meals. Good food and entertainment.
Really lovely 4 night cruise. Lovely ship with plenty of entertainment. Food good and staff extremely pleasant
Would thoroughly recommend.
First time had 5 enjoyable days
Booked a five night cruise on Balmoral. Allocated cabin 5228, so I looked it up on the deck plan. Looked fine. Final documentation arrived confirming cabin 5228. Luggage labels arrived for cabin 5228. So far so good. On arrival at Rosyth we were selected for random covid test so had to wait an extra 20 minutes. I thought we would get priority check in after this but we were sent to the back of the queue for another thirty minute wait to check in. Eventually at check in I gave my cabin number 5228 only to be told, quite abruptly, that I was wrong and I was in 5128A. We were given our cards and boarded, we found our cabin, which was nice enough.
This was when the problems started.
We went to the marquee bar for a drink before sailing away, but were told there was a problem with our card and they couldn't find cabin 5128A in the system. After about twenty minutes and three attempts they found my name and my all inclusive account. I thought it was just a glitch but it happened every time we tried to buy anything. Quite annoying. Then we went to the muster station only to be told again that our cabin wasn't in the system and our names weren't on the passenger list. Now the problem changed from annoying to distressing, if something happened we wouldn't show as missing. Dangerous error.
The next day we spoke to guest services and, luckily we were met by Sophia. She could see how worried we were and apologised. I asked for another cabin and Sophia arranged this immediately, changed our cards to show the new cabin number 5075 and issued new luggage labels and contacted all the other departments to make sure we were not questioned again. The new cabin was exactly the same grade and I had hoped for an upgrade due to the inconvenience of having to move. I mentioned this to Sophia and she arranged for a complementary bottle of champagne and chocolates to be delivered to the cabin. She even phoned me the next day to see if everything was to our satisfaction. Sophia really saved our cruise as we didn't have any more problem. She is a credit to Fred Olsen.
I believe that the test of good customer service is how a company reacts when something goes wrong and this was an example of how it should be done.
The rest of the cruise went without a glitch, we've been on Balmoral before and the staff were all excellent, the food was good and the Norwegian fjords are stunning.
So, I would have given five stars if we had been upgraded and if the check in had been better. My only warning to anyone else who gets given 5228 is call them immediately and get a move as it is a phantom cabin and you'll have the same problem.
Crew were helpful, friendly ,and always had a smile, food best ever, 1 st class holiday, was our first cruise, now we won't want a holiday any other way.
We cruised the Baltic Sea. the destinations were mostly very interesting and we learnt a lot about Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. We also visited Stockholm and Visby in Sweden.
The onboard entertainment by the ship's own show company was excellent!
the average age is 60+ so not a great ship for children or young adults.
The service and level of care on Balmoral was excellent. This was a beautiful route through the Swedish archipelago and the Baltics. I hope I will be back on Balmoral again soon.
Fred Olsen did it again! Great cruise with great dining experiences and good onboard entertainment. Nothing is any problem to them, I would recommend anyone going for their first cruise to pick Fred Olsen. Their ships are smaller than the big giants so they are more intimate and so friendly.
The cruise itself was very good but the lack of insistence of applying hand cleanser when entering the Palms buffet was rather annoying. It was not surprising that Covid was all over the ship. So many people had Covid that they ran out of isolation cabins. We were lucky and did not catch it. The lack of insulation between cabins was annoying. You could hear every conversation, cough etc. We did see a lot of sea wild life Whales and Dolphins and we had some good talks from the onboard wildlife team.
The food as usual was very good and we had very attentive waiters who were very friendly. They made a good experience for my husbands 65th Birthday. The whole team sang to him, gave him a cake and shook his hand. The room stewardess left towels in the shape of an elephant on the bed. The tours were over priced and if you can organise things yourself you can save yourselves some money. Overall we had a very enjoyable experience.
