Following a previous cruise with a different cruise company, it was nice to get back to the familiarity of a Celebrity ship.
The bars, staff and restaurant were all terrific and our balcony room was huge compared to the one that we had on a previous cruise line. With them our room would have been a suite!!!!
Brilliant food and service the only downside was that the entertainment by the ship's company was a bit vague and totally off point with us. All the brought on entertainment was really good. Looking forward to or next cruise in February.
Firstly, I would like to emphasize that I am not normally a whinger. However, I have been cruising for a number of years using various shipping lines and I can genuinely say that my most recent adventure into the unknown one was the worst cruise I have ever been on. Without exception, each day the food, although it looked tempting enough, was not hot enough, despite my complaints to the ship's catering staff. For the first time ever, on occasions, we (a family group of six), even had to clear our own plates away from the table after eating because there was not enough staff to do so. That happened more than once. There was a definite air of disinterest. The shore excursions can only be described as being utterly abysmal, the ship often 'parking up' miles away from anywhere and often there was no linking transport organized for people to go into towns or wherever it was that we landed. Our very last port of call was dreadful and made even Grimsby Docks look attractive. Very disappointed with 'Celebrity Cruises' and would definitely not use them ever again. A complete waste of an awful lot of money and needless to say a great disappointment. We should have stayed with our normal cruise line, Royal Caribbean. Lesson learned. T C
As ever the officers and crew were welcoming, friendly and helpful.
The ship is clean and seems well maintained.
However we were somewhat disappointed in the dining experience i.e. whilst there was little wrong about the offerings in main dining, the 5* experience has disappeared in that nothing was memorable or really special or better than lower rated cruise lines. As for the speciality dining, the menus are fine although they don't seem to have changed in at least 4 years except the prices are now so expensive I probably won't use in future.
Following a cruise with a rival cruise line, it was nice to slip back into the familiarity of Celebrity Cruises.
It was a wonderful cruise with only the weather for a few day upsetting the itinerary!
Great food, no need to go to the speciality restaurants as the main dining room offered excellent food every night.
Staff were helpful and friendly and we're looking forward to our next cruise next February to Australia and Tasmania!!
Vancouver, renowned as one of the better places on Earth to live, is a vibrant city, and was to be our (my wife Julie and two friends) starting point for the first week of our extended three-week British Columbia excursion, with an Alaskan cruise with Celebrity. We did the cruise on board the Century, but any other Celebrity ship would be sure to provide the same level of service, based on our other cruising experiences with the company.
The pre-cruise overnight hotel in Vancouver was well-placed for a steady walk to the harbour area, where we found the ship being readied for the following day’s departure from Canada Place. There has always been something quite exciting about viewing a ship being prepared for a holiday, knowing we would be aboard the following day, for what would turn out to be a remarkable 7-day holiday cruise.
The night before we left Vancouver we went to an Italian restaurant near the harbour at Canada Place, only mentioned because both Steve and I each had a pint of pear cider. It went down so well, we had another, and it was only when walking back to the hotel, I thought how much the cider had affected me, which was not normal. It was only the following day when I checked the menu in the window, when I found out what I thought had been a 4% proof cider, was in fact an 8% proof. It had indeed been a very nice drink, and for sure, they make the stuff strong in Canada.
The cruise itinerary and ship were excellent from start to finish, with a number of outstanding photographic opportunities presenting themselves. Moving up through Icy Strait Point (ISP), Ketchikan, into the Hubbard Glacier, and further north up to Juneau, were the sort of experiences we had waited a lifetime for.
At ISP we took a small boat out into the Bay and viewed at close range breaching hump-back whales, where I was fortunate to get a set of photographs, just as the enormous flukes disappeared into the water. Four-wheel buggies in Ketchikan also extended Sandra and Steve’s bravery, as a group of 10 were led by an instructor through the forests.
Launching over a large lump of earth banking just needed a lot of throttle, but no one else seemed to be able to do it, whereas I just wanted to do it again! A lot of the drivers were also unable to go with the leader’s pace, as we bounced along gravel strewn paths, with Julie saying she was not too surprised by me remaining in the leader’s exhaust fumes! With my racing background she had expected it from the moment the seat-belts were fastened, and I would hate to have disappointed.
We saw a bear at one stage, but it was only when the lead driver brought us to a halt, when things took on a more serious note. As we stopped he said he had received a radio message of an incident further back, and he needed to go to investigate.
With Julie and me sat alone as we awaited developments, there was no way I was turning the engine off. If we had to bail out quickly should Yogi re-appear, I needed to be able to do this very quickly. And it was at this point Julie looked over at me. “I am a bit worried it could be Sandra and Steve?” The same thought had gone through my mind… and indeed it was!
Going into one gravel strewn corner, Steve’s steering had snapped, and but for a tree trunk on the outside of the corner, the two of them, plus buggy, could have had a wild ride over a 30’ drop, and put any James Bond action scene to shame! When we became a holidaying foursome, it was always thought we would take our friends out of their comfort zone, although this one was perhaps pushing the envelope just a little more than any of us could have planned.
Husky sledging was swifter than anticipated, the animals accelerating with astonishing speed, as they pulled a four-wheeled 'buggy' behind them. It was certainly enough to leave a "wind in the air" feeling, as they pounded through the forest.
The Hubbard Glacier on the other hand certainly made any potential hardships worthwhile. As other passengers were togged up in winter gear, us hardy Brits were in shirt sleeves and shorts, and getting funny looks because of it too!
The temperature may well have been in single figures, but the sun was warming, and undoubtedly the alcohol helped. As we lounged away on deck chairs, receiving strange looks from thermally dressed passengers, the Celebrity staff were plying us with hot chocolate and Baileys, or more to the point, maybe it was Baileys with a small amount of hot chocolate? Whatever, Julie and Sandra looked very relaxed as they merrily sipped away in the surprisingly, at least for us, mild weather.
The day was gloriously sunny, with the Captain announcing it as quite possibly the best weather conditions he had ever experienced during the last 10-years he had been in charge, when compared to similar cruises he had been responsible for.
As we ventured further towards the Glacier 'wall', we had ice mountains on either side of the ship, which was dwarfed by the ice. Approaching the Hubbard Glacier was an awesome experience, as the 300’ high ice grew in size as we approached.
Loud cracks announced a picture taking opportunity, as large masses of ice calved away from the mountain side, before splashing into the water, and re-appearing back on the surface as small icebergs, which floated past the ship. The sight of some of these masses of floating ice was then made all the more unusual, with the appearance of seals ‘sunbathing’ on top of them, the creatures having wasted no time climbing on board!
The book of photographs I made after the holiday helped to show just how dramatically beautiful the landscape was.
Whilst in Juneau we were talking to a woman who claimed to have spent time in Monaco with Graham Hill and Jim Clark, who had four F1 World Championships between them between 1962 to 1968. People can talk, so to be sure I needed to test her, as I had a lot of inside, detailed information from that era of the sport that very few people could ever know. She was not only aware of it, but was able to expand further on what I knew, which was an added bonus. She was either an exceptionally good story-teller, and able to spin a decent yarn, or maybe more pertinently, she actually was on the Monaco scene through the 1960’s? On balance she had me convinced and I opted for the latter.
On the way back from Juneau early the next morning, with the gentle ‘thrum’ from the ship’s engines, I was high up by the front of the ship, with glaciers on either side, and no other passengers around, breathing in unpolluted cold, crystal clear air. I felt fit, well, and relaxed, and life had never felt so good at that stage in my life.
An Alaskan cruise with Celebrity cannot be beaten for the enjoyment it can provide, and yes, I would certainly do it again.
We had a fabulous cruise from start to finish. Our balcony cabin was spacious and such a nice place to relax, especially with breakfast on our balcony. The food was exceptional as were the staff who help to make our holiday just perfect.
Top class,we will be back!
Our 2nd cruise on the Celebrity Silhouette this year. Sadly standards are still not where they were, they are very understaffed. Our team in the main dining room and our steward were amazing. The food was good. The bars were really overcrowded and waiter service virtually non existent in all bars and the Oceanview area. The staterooms are looking dated and need updating. There is a lot of wasted space around the Celebrity Central area and the shops were poor, too much space given over to high end watches. The classic drinks package offers nowhere near the choices of previous years. Huge queues when getting off at ports. We enjoyed our holiday but will not be sailing with them again for a long time I fear, they are no longer 5 star modern luxury.
This is such a wonderful ship, so well maintained and staffed by an energetic, happy crew delighted to make your cruise vacation memorable. The public areas are so well designed that is just a simple pleasure just walking around the ship finding different spaces. The Library is a particular favourite where one can just sit and read in a quiet area. The dining options cover a wide variety of choices from the Ocean View Café offering buffet choices, main dining room options, Speciality dining options, and even a healthy choice clean option at the Spa Café. We chose to dine at many of the restaurants and at every one we were so well looked after with speedy, efficient service and excellent wine choices.
The excursions on offer cover all activity levels and we experienced excellent transport and guides on the tours we selected.
Our stateroom was well equipped and serviced by helpful attendants who were never obtrusive, and nothing was too much trouble to ensure our comfort.
The entertainment was excellent and varied - from cirque do Soleil type shows, to a magician, comedian, and the excellent Shamrock Tenors who played two shows to packed houses in the ship's beautiful Celebrity theatre.
The cruise director ensures that there is something happening all day and evening so no one can possibly get bored, but you can do as little or as much as you want and just enjoy being on board a beautiful ship. At the end of the cruise disembarkation was well organised and overall this last cruise - our fourth on this particular ship - was well worth the price.
As usual, Celebrity hard to beat on everything!!
Brilliant ship and crew and food so good you didn't need to even think about the speciality restaurants as the food in the main dining room was first class!
Excursions also good and when we had some awful weather, quick to cancel trips and refund money. When there was a hitch one day and all the excursions were late, Celebrity refunded 50% of excursion cost by way of apology.
They really are the best cruise line I've been on, so relaxed and even the 'Chic' nights, there's no pressure to get dressed up if you don't want to as no one worries and you can still go to the main dining room even if you're not in dress suits etc.
Looking forward to the next trip with them in February to Australia, sure it will be brilliant as usual.
Our 2nd time sailing with celebrity. Highly recommend this company.
We booked a suite and on arrival found the balcony not fit for purpose as it was very small and you could not sit and have a drink and enjoy the views.
The suite restaurant food was mediocre and the choice very limited but the staff were excellent.
This was our first post-covid cruise and we noticed a real difference in the service onboard Celebrity Silhouette. Previously, the attitude of all staff had been positive and helpful, not this time. Both Guest Relations and Shore Excursions weren't interested in helping with issues at all.
There was a lack of activities onboard too - the daily sheet would tell you it was listing over 60 activities but the vast majority were literally lists of what you could buy in a shop, these aren't activities, they're retail opportunities and don't need listing on daily activities sheet.
The entertainment onboard varied, as you'd expect. Some of the music was excellent - Tre Amici and Harrison Treble for example, the rest was OK and the staff cruise shows were repetitive, as they always have been to be fair.
The food in the main restaurant also varied considerably. We were on a 12-night cruise, a couple of nights we had excellent meals, the other ten were very average.
My favourite place on the Silhouette has always been Cafe Bacio - this time it just wasn't as good. There weren't enough staff so you had to wait a long time to be served and then the person taking the order often didn't listen to what you asked for, so you had to send back what you were brought and order all over again.
The staff in the buffet also need educating about the tongs - on ordering a vegetarian breakfast, I saw the crew member serve the spinach with the tongs he took out from where the bacon was. I refused the food and explained why but he didn't seem to understand the significance of what he had done.
Covid wasn't dealt with well - as more people were testing positive, the self-service buffet option should have become a served buffet and masks should have been mandatory, not merely a recommendation, as well as other passengers in the cabin with the person who had tested positive having to quarantine in the cabin with them, rather than be free to spread the virus around the ship.
The beds and pillows, as always, were really comfortable and we slept very well throughout the cruise.
Loved this ship. Extremely clean, very comfortable bed, very good food, such polite staff, plenty of entertainment. Can’t fault it. This was our first cruise and we were lucky to have chosen a great ship.
