Expert insights based on experience

All the research in the world can only take you so far – nothing beats real-life experience. That's why we caught up with Ryan McVinnie from Riviera Travel. With over 20 years in the travel industry, he knows exactly what separates meh from amazing when it comes to river cruises.
Here, Ryan shares what to actually expect from a Riviera Travel festive river cruise, blending personal experience with expert knowledge. From subtle insider tips to those if-you-know-you-know details that you only get by sailing yourself, consider this your ultimate guide to festive cruising – and discover why it might just be the most magical way to celebrate.
What to know before booking
In your experience, which festive river itineraries stand out for all the right reasons?
Ryan: Now there’s the million-dollar question, because all our festive cruises are brimming with yuletide spirit. We have a few exceptional itineraries, where you can celebrate the main events in style, but my personal preference is Riviera Travel’s festive market cruises that take you away before the big day itself.
For me, part of the magic of the season is the anticipation for the upcoming festivities, and what better way to do some last-minute shopping than at an authentic Christmas market, filled with unique stalls selling fabulous artisan gifts.
What ports are particularly unmissable in your experience?

Ryan: Austria’s capital, Vienna – which can be explored on our Danube’s Imperial Cities & Yuletide Markets river cruise – is one of my favourite cities at any time of year, with its rich history and majestic architecture.
Somehow, though, it becomes a little more magical at Christmas. It is so easy to become captivated by the wonderful atmosphere and the glittering lights around the city as you treat your tastebuds with some of the world’s finest hot chocolate and delicious Lebkuchen (gingerbread).
In a complete but equally wonderful contrast to Vienna, there is Rüdesheim, which you can visit on our Enchanting Rhine & Yuletide Markets river cruise. If the perfect chocolate-box setting is what you are looking for from a festive cruise, then there is no finer port than Rüdesheim. It's quirky, with charming, crooked houses, tiny streets, and is well known for the exceptional coffee that bears its name.
If I don’t fancy a fly-cruise, are there any rail and sail options?
Ryan: All our river cruises are available with regional flights at no extra supplement, but if you are unable or would prefer not to take to the skies, then the river Rhine is your ideal destination. Our rail-inclusive festive cruises include train travel to Brussels and then a connecting transfer to Cologne. It’s a longer journey than flying, but it’s a great way to get to know your fellow travellers and share the excitement of the coming days ahead.
As an equally attractive alternative, Riviera Travel will be launching an exciting new itinerary for the 2026 yuletide season, Magical Paris & Festive Seine, which will also offer both flight and rail options.
Do many people travel solo on festive cruises?

Ryan: Absolutely. The beauty of our river cruises is that the ships are a smaller, more boutique style, allowing for a more intimate yet sociable atmosphere. This is often lost on larger ocean vessels, where you will not often meet the same people twice. Our guests may come onboard as strangers, but after a cruise of sharing the same experiences, it’s so easy to get to know your fellow travellers, and many disembark as new friends, who choose to travel with us time and time again.
For those who would prefer, we also have dedicated festive cruises exclusive to solo travellers. These cruises are ideal for those who may feel a little anxious about travelling alone, or quite simply for those who prefer their own company. Plus, there’s no single supplement for any cabin grade on these dedicated sailings.
Do you often see multi-gen groups onboard, for example, parents travelling with their grown-up children?
Ryan: We all know that Christmas has a habit of bringing loved ones together, to spend quality time with each other and to begin new traditions. This is so evident on these festive cruises. Whilst our cruises are not suitable for guests under 12, we do often welcome multi-generational groups onboard.
How far in advance should you book a festive cruise?
Ryan: It is never too early to book a festive cruise with Riviera Travel. Whilst we do have availability on select festive cruises for this year, dates are filling up fast, and with demand increasing year after year, we are already taking bookings for 2026.
What to expect once you’re onboard
What’s included in the fare of a festive cruise with Riviera Travel?

Ryan: As with all our European river cruises throughout the year, we include five-star accommodation, a free drinks package including complimentary tea and coffee, return travel from the UK to the ship, full board dining including the highly anticipated chef’s dinner, included experiences in every port, free Wi-Fi, services of a Riviera cruise director and all port charges and taxes.
What’s the décor and atmosphere like aboard a Riviera Travel ship on a festive sailing?
Ryan: In one word: magical. A great deal of effort goes into decorating our ships for the yuletide season, and the excitement of Christmas truly kicks in from the moment you step on board. I won’t give anything away, but you will not be disappointed.
The atmosphere onboard is electric. Our onboard team and crew go to great depths to make your festive cruise an exceptional experience, with festive-themed activities throughout your holiday.
What is the food like on a Riviera Travel festive cruise?
Ryan: The beauty of a river cruise with Riviera Travel is that every meal you take onboard will feel like a treat. One of the many things that we are proud of is our ‘local flavours’ dining options.
All these dishes were once just recipes passed down from grandmother to granddaughter, made with local, seasonal ingredients and shared with loved ones. The head chef might not be a German Oma, French Grand-mère or Italian Nonna, but you can almost taste the love in every bite.
What does a typical Christmas Day look like on a Riviera Travel cruise?

Ryan: Christmas on the Rhine or Christmas on the Danube are ideal for those looking to be away over Christmas itself. Unlike many ocean cruises, Christmas Day is not spent cruising on a river cruise. We moor, and you can enjoy an included shore excursion. It’s wonderful to explore these towns whilst being captivated by the locals enjoying the festivities of the day. The standout on Christmas Day is the fabulous gala dinner, served onboard in the main restaurant.
What about New Year’s Eve on a Riviera sailing?
Ryan: New Year’s Eve is a huge highlight on our New Year on the Danube and New Year on the Rhine river cruises. After a day of exploring, it’s time to celebrate and enjoy an excellent New Year’s Eve gala dinner. Afterwards, a classical recital is held onboard, and as the clock strikes midnight, our wonderful crew will serve celebration drinks and canapés as you welcome in the New Year.
What’s the weather typically like on a festive sailing?
Ryan: The climate is often similar to that in the UK or somewhat colder, but that’s all part of the charm. One of my favourite memories of travelling on our Enchanting Rhine & Yuletide Market cruise was being on the sundeck with a hot drink in hand, breathing in the crisp air and being hypnotised by the ever-changing Rhine and ruined castles that sit along it atop rocky crags.
What do passengers typically wear aboard festive sailings?

Ryan: The dress code is casual, with the option to dress up in more formal attire for the chef’s dinner. When on deck and out and about, be sure to wrap up warm – gloves, thick coats, hats and scarves are highly recommended, and sensible shoes are a definite must, especially as surfaces can be slippery at this time of year.
And of course, what’s a festive cruise without a Christmas jumper?
