Compare & book Norwegian Luna(6)
My opinion in a nutshell

We take a closer look at Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest vessel and second Prima Plus class ship, Norwegian Luna, during a three-night sailing via the line’s private island, Great Stirrup Cay, after godmother and hull artist ELLE christened the vessel in PortMiami.
The 3,565-guest ship boasts 18 decks and has 1,760 cabins supported by 1,597 crew members. With more than 17 dining venues offering 15 different cuisines, as well as 18 bars and lounges, the ship is the perfect pick for multi-generational families with differing tastes.
You’ll also find the Aqua Slidecoaster, a hybrid rollercoaster-waterslide, a 10-storey drop slide, an adults-only retreat and a two-deck spa and fitness centre. Its modern décor, range of amenities and all-inclusive package options make it a great pick for couples, families and solo travellers alike.
Style & character

Having debuted earlier this year, Norwegian Luna has a stylish and contemporary feel. Think light grey panelling, cream and blue carpets and artwork around every corner. You can even purchase paintings and sculptures by the ship’s godmother and hull artist, ELLE, while onboard.
The atrium deserves a special mention. Its winding staircases and intersecting decks make it feel like a spaceship, ready to transport you on a cosmic cruise of discovery.
Each dining option, meanwhile, embodies the cuisines they serve. Thai spot Sukhothai, for example, features stylish artwork and sleek décor, while Hudson’s wraparound sea views set the scene for a memorable meal.
Cabins

My Family Balcony Stateroom (11827) features sleek grey and metallic touches that conjure the sense of upmarket décor. Art inspired by the ship’s hull stretches across the wall behind the bed, which is a nice touch. The cabin is well-appointed with plenty of space for a couple or a family of four.
A large double bed with ample space beneath for luggage is complemented by a double sofa bed, as well as a desk-come-dressing table, a flatscreen TV and a balcony with two lounge chairs and a table. It’s rare to find this much room in a four-berth cabin on a ship this size.
There are also solo staterooms for individual travellers available, as well as options in the Haven, the ship’s keycard-only area, which comes with extra cost. It comes with 24-hour butler service, as well as its own pool, guest services desk and restaurant.
Food & drink

The range of food and drink options onboard Norwegian Luna is among some of the best I’ve experienced on a cruise. Complimentary options include the Indulge Food Hall, featuring a modern twist on buffet dining with iPad ordering, Hudson’s, the ship’s main dining room, the Commodore Room, the Local Bar & Grill and the Surfside Café.
Specialist options, which come with a £50pp cover charge, include new-to-Prima Plus Sukhothai, as well as Palomar, Onda by Scarpetta, Cagney’s Steakhouse, Hasuki, Los Lobos, Le Bistro and Nama Sushi & Sashimi.
Each offers a distinct dining experience, from the décor of the restaurant to the dishes on offer. Cagney’s is a must-visit on any cruise, with cuts of rich beef, elegant sides and desserts to boot, creating a truly memorable evening.
Service & facilities

The crew are attentive, fun and helpful, with most bartenders remembering your drink order, which is very impressive for a ship of this size. The gym is well-stocked and clean, with multiple cardio machines and free weights to stimulate an effective workout. Attached to this is the two-deck Mandara Spa, complete with a Thermal Suite, massage rooms, treatment options and cold and hot saunas.
Entertainment & excursions

Norwegian Cruise Line has upped the level with onboard entertainment options on Luna. New shows include Elton: A Tribute to Elton John, Hiko, Lunatique and Syd Norman’s Presents: A Tribute to the Eagles. Each offers a completely unique experience and fun for the whole family. It is worth noting that Lunatique is an adults-only show. Elton is an amalgamation of bright lights and toe-tapping tunes, while Hiko mixes impressive lighting with out-of-this-world acrobatics.
The only excursion we took part in during the sailing was a trip to Great Stirrup Cay, the line’s private island in the Bahamas. On shore, you’ll find a kids’ splash park, a restaurant and multiple bars, as well as the adults-only Vibe Shore Club and private retreat Silver Cove. This summer, the line will launch the Great Tides Waterpark – an adrenaline junkie’s dream with 19 waterslides.
Value for money

While dining, accommodation and entertainment are included in the cruise price, everything else comes at extra cost, so we recommend upgrading with one of NCL’s Free at Sea packages. The first tier, Free at Sea, includes premium beverages, speciality dining, standard Wi-Fi, excursion credits and discounts on third and fourth guests.
Free at Sea Plus, meanwhile, includes the above plus top-shelf spirits, premium wines and champagne, Starbucks coffee, 50 per cent of cover charges on additional specialist dining nights and unlimited high-speed Wi-Fi.
