World of Cruising, along with our sister publication, Cruise Trade News, has one of the UK’s most experienced teams of cruise journalists and contributors. Our experts have racked up hundreds of nights at sea with most cruise lines. Most weeks, one of our writers will be at sea or on a river. Here, that expertise shapes our advice on when to book your cruise to Southeast Asia.
What counts as Southeast Asia?

The following countries count as Southeast Asia: Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, Brunei, Myanmar and Timor-Leste.
With multiple island nations and vast, varied coastlines, the region is naturally well-suited to cruising, and exploring by ship can be an excellent way to experience several distinct cultures in a single trip.
That said, many of these countries experience heavy monsoon seasons and sharply varied climates. What follows sets out when to go where, depending on what you want from your voyage.
Top cruise ports:Ho Chi Minh City, Chan May, Nha Trang and Hanoi (Ha Long Bay) in Vietnam; Bangkok (Laem Chabang), Ko Samui, Koh Kood and Phuket in Thailand; Langkawi and Penang in Malaysia; Komodo National Park and Bali (Benoa) in Indonesia; Manila in the Philippines; Sihanoukville in Cambodia; Singapore; and Borneo (split between multiple countries).
Best months to cruise for festivals and culture
When to go: November to February

Just as Britain gets grey and drizzly, many bucket-list destinations in Southeast Asia are at their most appealing – thanks to pleasant weather and cultural events worth planning your cruise around.
November and December are prime months to visit Thailand. The weather is warm and dry, and the season coincides with some of its most striking festivals.
One of the most notable is Loy Krathong, which typically falls in November. It’s marked by hundreds of thousands of krathong – small leaf containers filled with flowers, incense or other offerings – floating on waterways across the country. There are parades too and, in northern Thailand, the release of dazzling sky lanterns.
Thailand is also a great place to ring in the New Year, from the brilliant fireworks displays over the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok to the lively beach barbeques on the white sands of Phuket.
In Vietnam, meanwhile, the most important festival of the year is Tết, which falls in January or February. This is the Lunar New Year, and streets and public spaces are alive with elaborate decorations, frequently featuring peach blossoms and kumquat trees. Foodies will be particularly drawn to the regional delicacies on offer, from fried spring rolls in the north to caramelised pork in the south.
Top stops: Ho Chi Minh City, Nha Trang and Hanoi (Ha Long Bay) in Vietnam; Bangkok (Laem Chabang) and Phuket in Thailand.
Top tip: Destinations across Southeast Asia can be exceptionally busy at this time of year, so if you prefer a calmer experience, it’s worth skipping the major holidays.
Who to sail with: Oceania Cruises is a strong contender, thanks to its large range of destination-rich itineraries in Southeast Asia, luxurious mid-sized ships and reputation for top-tier regional cuisine.
Princess Cruises is another excellent choice, with itineraries that include longer time in port, so you don’t have to rush through the sights, as well as a clear emphasis on cultural immersion both on board and on shore.
Best months to cruise for beaches and sun
Best time to go: January to March

If you’re dreaming of winter sun, Southeast Asia offers up slices of paradise if you know where to look.
Malaysia’s west coast, particularly destinations like Langkawi, is well worth a visit for its abundant beaches and lush vegetation. Expect sugary white sands, cyan seas reminiscent of the Maldives and lush mangrove forests.
January through March is generally considered peak season, thanks to ample sunshine, minimal rainfall and temperatures in the high 20s and low 30s.
This window also aligns with the best conditions on many of Thailand’s beaches. Take the serene island of Koh Kood, with its ravishingly pretty yet laidback beaches. Days here can be spent lazing in overwater hammocks and sipping Thai iced tea as you bask in the 28C heat. Waterfalls in the island’s jungle interiors, meanwhile, await more intrepid travellers looking for out-of-the-way spots.
March in particular is also a good month to visit Vietnam’s UNESCO-listed Ha Long Bay, before the frequent storms of summer set in. The weather is inviting and mild, with temperatures in the low 20s and favourable conditions for hopping between clusters of limestone islets.
Top stops: Langkawi and Penang in Malaysia; Koh Kood and Phuket in Thailand; Ha Long Bay in Vietnam.
Top tip: While this period is usually quieter than December, when many western travellers fly out over Christmas, it still draws plenty of visitors, especially around Chinese New Year in Malaysia.
Who to sail with:Seabourn provides a top-of-the-range, ultra-luxury experience in Southeast Asia. The small size of its ships means it can reach lesser-visited ports. For example, select sailings include their signature Caviar in the Surf experience on a secluded beach on Koh Kood, accompanied by copious champagne.
Celebrity Cruises is also a great choice, especially if you want a premium experience at a more accessible price point. Its ships tend to be large and family-friendly, and it offers a wide range of departure dates across the region.
Best months to cruise for wildlife
When to go: June to August

The Coral Triangle, which features countries like Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, has an incredible amount of biodiversity – so much so it’s called the Amazon of the seas.
June, July and August are especially good for wildlife in east Indonesia. It’s dry season, which means conditions are ideal for hopping among savannah and rainforest-capped islands. Water temperatures and underwater visibility are excellent too, making it perfect for scuba diving and snorkelling.
Crucially, there are plenty of animals to see, from manta rays looping through the shallows to whale sharks, known for their dappled patterns and gentle dispositions.
June in particular is a good month to observe the eponymous dragons of Komodo National Park. Vegetation has thinned after the rains, making them easier to spot, and sightings tend to be more reliable before mating season peaks later in the summer.
At the other end of the Coral Triangle, the equator-straddling island of Borneo is also a major wildlife destination. As the third-largest island in the world and home to some of Earth’s oldest rainforests, it boasts a fascinating diversity of endemic species.
July and August are good months to visit because the humidity is less oppressive and the seas are calmer. Best of all, it’s an optimal window for seeing orangutans, proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants and hatching baby turtles.
Top tip: If you want to see remarkable wildlife in genuinely remote places, choose a small ship cruise line that can visit fragile areas without overwhelming them.
Top stops: Komodo National Park, Labuan Bajo, Moyo Island and Bali in Indonesia; Borneo (Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, Derawan Islands), which is shared by multiple nations.
Who to sail with:Aqua Expeditions is a great luxury option, thanks to its 1:1 guest-to-crew ratio. It has multiple departure dates for itineraries to Bali and Komodo over the summer months.
For Borneo, the UK-based brand Noble Caledonia is a strong choice, especially given its focus on responsible travel.
Best months for a river cruise
When to go: November to February

The Mekong, which flows from the Tibetan Plateau to the South China Sea, is the longest river in Southeast Asia. A cruise along it can be a rich and revelatory way to explore the interiors of countries such as Vietnam and Cambodia.
Over the course of your journey, you can expect to encounter floating markets, gold-spired palaces, centuries-old pagodas and storied fishing villages.
While you can find sailings through much of the year, November to February is the best time to embark on a Mekong voyage. Temperatures are at their most comfortable, humidity is lower, and the river is calmer and easier to navigate.
The landscapes are also scenic and lush, thanks to the downpours of monsoon. Wildlife tends to be more visible during this window too, most notably birdlife near the wetlands and in the floodplains. Sunrises and sunsets over the water are remarkably pretty, too, thanks to the clear skies.
Contrast this to June through October, when flooding can disrupt itineraries and mosquitoes make for unwelcome companions, and it’s easy to see why savvy travellers avoid the wet season.
Top stops:Cai Be, Sa Dec and Tan Chau in Vietnam; Phnom Penh, Kampong Tralach and Kampong Cham in Cambodia.
Top tip: If you’re looking for a shoulder-season deal, consider travelling between March and May, when prices tend to dip. Just be aware that inland temperatures can climb above 35C and the humidity can be intense.
Who to sail with:Riviera Travel is a respected, multi-award-winning operator with a long-established reputation for river cruising. Its Mekong itineraries are thoughtfully designed, and in 2027, the line will launch a brand-new five-star ship on the river.
Uniworld Boutique River Cruises is another luxury option, offering expertly curated excursions and an optional Ha Long Bay extension.
