Over 185 years, Cunard has cultivated a reputation for cultured journeys, offering substance as well as style. Aboard Queen Elizabeth, as well as Art Deco accents, gleaming chandeliers and croquet on the games deck, you’ll find the Royal Court Theatre, where Come from Away will have its at-sea debut.
Written by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, the musical began a decade ago as a small show about a small town. It tells the remarkable true story of 6,579 air passengers grounded in Newfoundland in the aftermath of 9/11, and the community that welcomed these ‘come from aways’ into their lives. As its producers often note, it’s not a 9/11 story, but a 9/12 one, about what unfolds in the wake of tragedy.
When it eventually made its way to Broadway, it was met with critical acclaim and sold-out shows. Ben Brantley, chief theatre critic for The New York Times, called it a “big bearhug of a musical,” while Peter Marks of The Washington Post described it as “effervescent” and “an antidote for what ails the American soul.”
After a successful Broadway run that won it a Tony Award, Come from Away crossed the Atlantic to the West End, where it picked up several Olivier Awards and a Critics’ Circle Theatre Award.
Now, as it celebrates its 10th anniversary, Cunard is bringing the internationally acclaimed show to the high seas for the first time.
The musical’s producer, John Brant, says: “Even after 10 years, it’s still incredible to see the impact this show has on people. Now more than ever, we believe it’s important to gather friends and family to see it together, with the hope that it inspires them to find common ground in their lives. This partnership with Cunard is a meaningful opportunity to bring our story to new corners of the world, and we can’t wait for passengers to experience it for themselves.”
Guests on Queen Elizabeth’s Caribbean voyage out of Miami on October 16, 2025, will be the first to see an ensemble of 12 performers take on this specially crafted production, designed for the stage at sea.
