Three reasons why a Rhine River cruise is worth it

1. It’s steeped in history

The Rhine River has a rich history. It was here that the Ancient Romans decided to establish the border of their empire, which separated them from ‘barbarians.’

Later, in 1814, Prussian General von Blücher led his troops across the Rhine River to help drive Napoleon out of Germany.

And it was along the Rhine that US troops stumbled across and seized an intact bridge at Remagen. They raced across the Ludendorff Bridge – the first opportunity they’d had to cross the strategically vital Rhine – on March 7th, 1945, and into the heartland of Nazi Germany. Two months later, on May 8th, World War II was over, with the bridge’s capture having played a pivotal part.

However, the Rhine wasn’t only used for political convoys. Earlier, in the 19th century, Romantic poets chose to travel along the Rhine for pleasure, with German poet Clemens Brentano expressing his appreciation for the river and region in his prose.

Brentano’s 1801 poem Lore Lay, about a tragic enchantress, Lorelei, was penned to explain the magnificence of the mighty river that flowed past fertile vineyards and fairytale castles.

2. Striking scenery

Middle Rhine
The Middle Rhine is known as a particularly picturesque stretch of river

On a Rhine River cruise, you’ll sail through spectacular scenery that, as we have just discussed, influenced Romantic writers, as well as painters and musicians.

The Middle Rhine, the 150-km stretch between Mainz and Cologne, in particular, is dominated by beautiful castles (there is one on almost every peak), including Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, Eltz Castle, Reichsburg Castle and Landshut Castle.

That being said, the star attraction of any Rhine River cruise is arguably the dramatic Rhine Gorge – a 65-km stretch from Bingen to Koblenz whose sheer-sided hills are studded with emerald vineyards, flower-filled villages and half-timbered houses.

South of the gorge, you’ll find the rolling hills of the Black Forest and its endless hiking trails. Elsewhere, in the other direction, north of Koblenz, you’ll call at the laidback German city of Cologne, where you can take a guided tour to see the UNESCO-listed Gothic cathedral with its intricate stained glass.

Make no mistake: an astonishing number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites can be seen while sailing along the Rhine from the Speyer Cathedral – one of the grandest Romanesque cathedrals in the Holy Roman Empire and the burial place of German emperors for almost 300 years – to the charming town of Bamberg with its churches, bicycles and breweries.

3. It’s a gourmet adventure

If you’re passionate about food and wine, you’ll be spoilt for choice on a Rhine River cruise.

There’s the chance to sample regional specialities – be it Kölsch beer in Cologne; pretzels in Wertheim; an indulgent slice of Black Forest gateau (an irresistible combination of dark sponge cake, cream, cherry and schnapps) in Germany’s Black Forest; superb cheese dishes in Switzerland; and Alsatian treats like tarte flambée (a tasty flatbread pizza).

Wash them all down with a glass of fruity schnapps along the Oberkircher Brennersteig, a nearly nine-mile loop through the Black Forest that’s lined with self-serve schnapps fountains; Rüdesheimer Kaffee (your waitress will mix brandy and sugar cubes in tiny traditional pots then set it alight, before adding strong coffee and a thick layer of whipped cream); or a fine wine.

For the Rhine is home to some of Europe’s most impressive wine regions. Wine has been grown here since Roman times, with over 60 per cent of German wine produced along the banks of the Rhine.

The hero grape is Riesling, which makes some of the finest white wines in the world.

Three reasons a Douro River cruise might not be worth it for you

1. Life onboard is low-key

If you love the vibe of a mega resort where there are more restaurants, bars, attractions and spectacular entertainment venues than you can shake a stick at, a Rhine River cruise may not be for you.

There are no casinos or Broadway-style shows onboard, which will suit passengers who prefer to focus on the journey and destinations. Unlike ocean cruises, Rhine River cruises tend to dock in the heart of the cities you're visiting, making exploring and returning to the ship easier.

However, those who want lots of things to do onboard, as well as an array of places to eat and party, could end up feeling short-changed.

2. Water levels can impact your itinerary

Unfortunately, both high and low water levels can disrupt a Rhine cruise. When river levels rise, ships are unable to pass under the bridges and docks are submerged. Conversely, low water levels, typically caused by a heatwave or a drought, make the river unnavigable.

Either (unenviable) scenario can force river cruise lines to alter or cancel their itineraries, and often at short notice.

For passengers, this could mean having to deal with last-minute changes. If you are lucky, some parts of your itinerary will simply be replaced with coach travel while you wait for the river levels to rise or fall.

The worst-case scenario is that your cruise will be cancelled outright (although the river cruise line will refund you money or offer an alternative sailing).

While cruise itineraries are never guaranteed (it’s in the small print), if you’re worried about fluctuating water levels, think carefully about sailing in spring (when high water is at its worst) or summer, when warm weather increases pressure on the rivers.

3. It’s not the most family-friendly form of travel

While river cruising is no longer aimed solely at mature travellers (indeed, the average age has dropped to 55), it’s still not the most obvious holiday for those travelling with children in tow.

Sure, there are some lines – step forward A-ROSA, CroisiEurope, and Uniworld Boutique River Cruises – who roll out the welcome mat for little ones, but the lion’s share are aimed at adults and offer decidedly adult activities (think walking tours, lectures and cocktail pianists).

That being said, Celebrity Cruises' upcoming entrance into the river cruise market could help change all that. The operator, part of the Royal Caribbean Group, has ordered 10 river ships, and all will receive children. Bookings will open later this year with sailings starting in 2027.

Your cruise, your way

Planning your Rhine River cruise can feel overwhelming when you realise how much choice is out there. Do you want an adults-only shop or one that embraces ankle biters? Are you travelling with your other half or as a solo cruiser? The good news is that whatever you’re after, there’s a Rhine River ship with your name on it.
