Annual Awards Recognize Environmental Innovation in Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises’ Ships

Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises announced today the winners of their coveted environmental awards. For Royal Caribbean, Mariner of the Seas has been selected as the Environmental Ship of the Year, and Brilliance of the Seas as the Environmentally Innovative Ship of the Year. Celebrity Summit was selected as both the Environmental Ship of the Year and the Environmentally Innovative Ship of the Year for Celebrity.

In its eighth year, these annual fleet-wide competitions underscore Royal Caribbean and Celebrity’s long-standing commitment to environmental innovation and improvement. Competing for these awards encourage and reward crew members who progressively advance their ships’ environmental performance in ways that go above and beyond regulatory compliance.

Environmental Resources Management, an independent environmental audit and consulting firm, conducted the review for the competition, which covered 2006 operations for 21 Royal Caribbean and nine Celebrity ships.

Judging for the awards was based on five rigorous environmental criteria established by Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and the auditing firm. These included environmental performance, timeliness and effectiveness of corrective actions related to audit findings, reports of near incidents and non- conformities, submission of environmental status reports, performance of environmental equipment and innovative thinking.
